The Modern Superhero Comic Event Picker was inspired by an episode of the 3 Chicks Review Comics podcast in which they joked about someone making a “grim n gritty wheel.” I decided to give it a shot, but it ended up transforming into a modern age gimmick generator — because what is grim n gritty now, other than another gimmick?

This is so amazing guys. Inspired by something Sue and I were talking about on an old episode of 3 Chicks (specifically regarding the nu 52) Kate took us to heart and HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK.

So fun.

I’m a 42 year old mother of 2. Yesterday, I *slept in* until 4:30am, got my babies up and fed, planned an Easter brunch menu, finished a batch of rewrites, worked all day writing more comics than you, managed to sneak in 30 minutes on the treadmill and a quick shower before grabbing my hilarious and brilliant husband, two amazing children and double-batch potluck dish and heading to a seder at the home of two of our best friends, where I *rocked* playing with my daughter and her new bow & arrow out on the porch.

Kate Bishop is great. I love Kate. But she’s a fiction, sweetheart, and she’s no fucking me.

“I really don’t think Marvel and DC are helping things by having gritty, R-rated versions of their superheroes in their main comics – what they sell as the “real” versions – while simultaneously selling those exact same characters in kids’ comics and plastering them all over lunchboxes and animated cartoons… Casual readership by kids, or by parents for their kids, is effectively impossible the way things are currently structured. And I think the waters are muddied too far now to claw that ground back. I think it’s insane that DC have spent 70 years making Superman as big as Mickey Mouse, and branding him to be understood by parents as being pretty much as kid-friendly as Mickey Mouse, only to piss that brand away in a decade. Nothing wrong with doing mature content in comics – in fact, it should be encouraged as often as possible – but doing it with characters who are on your kids’ lunchboxes is kind of moronic. Take a lesson from Watchmen and come up with new characters for that stuff. And then go back to Superman and Batman and put the same kind of love and effort and craft and intelligence you’ve been putting into all those rape scenes and body mutilations into something kids can read, and adults can also be proud to read because of all the love and effort and craft and intelligence you’ve put into it, and make those the “real” versions.”

Switching things up a little, here’s a commission for a Batgirl and Kitty Pryde (plus Lockheed) team-up. Doesn’t seem like Kitty is any better than Supergirl at messing around with poor Batgirl’s world.

30 Day Doctor Who Challenge Day 14 - The Villain Who Scared You the Most

The Weeping Angels, as they appeared in “Blink,” were menacing as hell. The whole thing where you never see them move, where they’re just standing there one second and then all outstretched arms and fangs when you turn back… yeah, that’s creepy. I think they’ve suffered a bit in subsequent appearances as SteeMo plays fast and loose with his own rules where he thinks the plot demands it, but they’re still really chilling in “Blink,” which has become traditional Halloween viewing in our house.

A close runner up is Mr. Sin in “The Talons of Weng Chiang.” How do you make a ventriloquist dummy even scarier? Make him an racist caricature and give him a knife.
