Atari turns 40 years old today (the fact that it’s just 4 years older than me is both comforting and worrying), and I consider myself very lucky to have grown up in the time of the first great home gaming console, the Atari 2600… hell, I remember when they were paneled with imitation wood grain and just called the Atari Video Computer System (VCS)! Primitive as they may seem today, those games were so much fun, and a surprising number of them still hold up. And the box art of some of those early games was amazing. The games themselves could never hope to match it, of course, but our imaginations always did a pretty good job of filling in the gaps.
